Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka, 12th Match Pool A

ICC Cricket World Cup 2015
Dunedin, February 22, 2015, 22 February, 2015

  • Sri Lanka have opened their account in the tournament. However, this is certainly not a satisfying win as Afghanistan ran them very close. That's it from this game. We enjoyed bringing it to you. Switch tabs to get all the action from the India-South Africa match at the MCG. Take care. Goodbye!

  • Here are a few tweets
  • Russel Arnold: Few years on people will look back N say "hundred vs Afghan" but all will forget D true value/importance/class.. One of D best @MahelaJay
  • Nathan Bracken: Great performance by @ACBofficials. Almost there. So many promising signs
  • Rajneesh Gupta: Most hundreds in World Cup:6-Sachin Tendulkar 5-Ricky Ponting 4-Mark Waugh 4-Sourav Ganguly 4-MAHELA JAYAWARDENA #cwc15 #SLvsAFG
  • Gautam Bhimani: Magnificent fight from @ACBofficials but in the end the power and experience of Perera just built on that @MahelaJay special #SLvAFG
  • Mazher Arshad: Only 2nd time in ODI history that both openers are dismissed for Golden Ducks in ODI. Prev instance: Zimbabwe vs WI at Georgetown 2006.
  • Mathews: "Relieved, but I thought Afghanistan put us under a lot of pressure and we had to fight really hard until the last ball was bowled. To be honest, we need to raise our standards to compete against the top teams. It was a see-saw kind of a game. They started off brilliantly and then we pulled it back. They had been putting pressure right throughout the game and they have been playing brilliant cricket. So, credit should go to them. I was actually struggling to time the ball, but I knew that I had to stick there with Mahela to get some kind of partnership going and then for Thisara to come in and blast those 47 runs was unbelievable. We try and use Dimuth (Karunaratne) as a floater. When a wicket falls early on, we try and use him up the order. We've got heaps of experience, we have got Dilshan, Sangakkara and Mahela, so we can utilise them in pressure situations."
  • Nabi: "We started very well, but we were 30-40 runs short on that pitch. We bowled well for the first 10-15 overs and put pressure on the Sri Lankan guys. Also, I think we missed a few run-outs at the start. It's quite tough in a tight game and the boys played really well. Maybe, they batted well and again proved that they were a big team. The way Jayawardene and Mathews played, with discipline and did not take pressure and also they took the game away from us. Hopefully, we will play well in the next game. Dawlat, Hamid and Shapoor bowled brilliantly. Hopefully, they will be fit for the next game."
  • By removing both set batsmen in a space of 3 runs, Afghanistan came back strongly into the game. Thisara Perera and Jeevan Mendis survived a few close moments and Perera in particular, attacked the bowling to transfer the pressure back on Afghanistan's bowlers. The duo also recorded Sri Lanka's best ever 7th wicket stand in World Cups and eventually got them past the line with 10 balls to spare. Hamid was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Shapoor and Dawlat bagged one each.
  • Chasing 233, Afghanistan removed both openers, Thirimanne and Dilshan for first-ball ducks - this was only the second time in ODIs that both openers were dismissed for golden ducks. Sangakkara too went very early, despite getting lucky with a couple of run-out chances. Jayawardene shared a small partnership with Karunaratne before the latter threw it away. Captain Mathews then combined well with Jayawardene and shared a 126-run stand for the 5th wicket. Jayawardene recorded his 19th ODI hundred - also his 4th hundred in World Cups - in the process. However, Mathews fell 6 runs short of a fifty and soon was followed by Jayawardene, who gifted his wicket away to Hamid and walked off in disbelief.
  • Jayawardene: "Yeah, I think we probably dodged a bullet today. All credit to Afghanistan, I thought they batted really well in tough conditions. And upfront bowled beautifully. They bowled upto the batsmen, got a bit of movement and put us under a lot of pressure. Big relief, yes! They got the pace, they got a bit of movement as well and if there is something in the wicket, they are a handful and have played a lot of international cricket. It's not a big gap between the top countries and the others. In that situation I wasn't worrying about the other end, I just wanted to make sure that I batted 50 overs, but the disappointing fact was I couldn't finish the game off. Angelo (Mathews) batted really well for that partnership and Thisara (Perera) came and finished it off for us. All in all it was a good effort, but we have a bit of work to do. It was a bit of a wait after the first game, now we have two quick games coming up which is probably a good thing for us rather than sitting around."
  • Jayawardene is the Man of the Match
  • A heartbreaking result for Afghanistan. They came so close but couldn't seal the game. With the top three gone for next to nothing, they would have fancied their chances, but Jayawardene used his experience to bail Sri Lanka out of trouble.
  • 48.2 Nabi to T Perera, FOUR, that's it! Sri Lanka have avoided an embarrassing loss. Short and outside off stump, Perera rocks back and muscles it hard over extra-cover for a one-bounce four. This is a fine innings from the all-rounder, who was picked ahead of Nuwan Kulasekara
  • 48.1 Nabi to T Perera, no run, outside off stump this time, Perera backs away and lets it go
  • 48.1 Nabi to J Mendis, 2 wides, the captain fires this fast and down the leg-side, Mendis tries to help it on its way but misses. The keeper fumbles and they take an extra run
  • Mohammad Nabi [5.0-0-22-0] is back into the attack
  • This is a record 7th wicket stand for Sri Lanka in World Cups.

  • 47.6 Hamid to T Perera, 2 runs, slower delivery on the leg stump, Perera flicks it to mid-wicket
  • 47.5 Hamid to T Perera, FOUR, slower ball short and outside off stump, Perera rocks back and cuts well, beats backward point and beats the man at sweeper as well. Sri Lanka are just a hit away now. That brings up the fifty partnership as well
  • 47.4 Hamid to T Perera, 2 runs, this is excellent cricket from the duo. As soon as he dug out the yorker towards mid-on, he raced calling 'two, two, two.' Mid-on was on the boundary and Mendis was quick to return back for the second
  • 47.3 Hamid to T Perera, 2 runs, a misfield at mid-wicket, Shapoor is the man, gives Sri Lanka a couple of runs. Short of a length delivery on the leg stump, Perera mistimes the pull, the fielder dives to his left, but doesn't stop the ball
  • 47.2 Hamid to J Mendis, 1 run, this time Mendis taps it to cover-point and sets off
  • 47.1 Hamid to J Mendis, no run, short of length delivery outside off stump, Mendis attempts an ugly dab as he tries to guide it to third man, he was off balance while trying to meet the ball, luckily for him, it didn't kiss the bat
  • Drama! The umpire rules Mendis out caught behind after a long thought. Mendis shakes his head and reviews straightaway. In fact, the keeper hardly went up in his appeal. Snicko is absolutely dead as Rameez Raja would say. The decision has been overturned.
  • Hamid Hassan [8.0-0-34-3] is back into the attack

  • 46.6 Dawlat Zadran to T Perera, no run, fine yorker, Perera digs it out
  • 46.5 Dawlat Zadran to T Perera, no run, slower delivery outside off, Perera pokes at it away from the body in an attempt to guide it to third man, the keeper dives forward and he takes it on the bounce. He was unsure, but the square leg umpire, who had a great view said that it was a bump ball
  • Has that carried to the keeper? Not out says the umpire.
  • 46.4 Dawlat Zadran to J Mendis, 1 run, almost a yorker, driven down to long-on
  • 46.3 Dawlat Zadran to T Perera, 1 run, a fine yorker just outside off stump, Perera digs it out to point
  • 46.2 Dawlat Zadran to T Perera, FOUR, full and outside off stump, Perera slices it over backward point and the man at sweeper had no chance. 10 runs have come off the first two balls
  • 46.1 Dawlat Zadran to T Perera, SIX, no Dawlat, no! Can't bowl full tosses to this bloke, he'll smash you all day. It's a high full toss as well, Perera picked it early, waited for it to come and muscled it very hard. The ball goes flat over mid-off
  • Dawlat Zadran [8.0-0-32-1] is back into the attack
  • Sri Lanka have scored 19 runs in the last two overs. That should ease the nerves a bit. Just 26 needed off 4 overs now.

  • 45.6 Shapoor to T Perera, 1 run, short of length delivery outside off stump, Perera taps it to point for a sharp run
  • 45.5 Shapoor to T Perera, 2 runs, in the air again and it's safe again! Short and wide outside off stump, Perera slashes hard and ends up slicing it, the fielder at third man almost over-runs the ball but he manages to stop it
  • 45.4 Shapoor to T Perera, 2 runs, great effort from Stanikzai at mid-wicket. Short and on the stumps, Perera pulls very hard, the fielder dives to his right and saves two, he has a shy at the bowler's end and a direct-hit would have been very tight for Mendis
  • 45.3 Shapoor to T Perera, no run, uppish but doesn't carry this time. Short of a length, flat-batted hard, but it doesn't reach the fielder at mid-off
  • Mahela Jayawardene has not taken off his pads yet.
  • 45.2 Shapoor to T Perera, FOUR, edgeddddd but safe! That's so unlucky for the bowler. Short of a length delivery, Perera swings across the line, gets a thick edge that flies over the keeper, who jumps high to grab the ball
  • 45.1 Shapoor to J Mendis, 1 run, just taps the good length delivery to cover-point for an easy single
  • Shapoor Zadran [9.0-1-38-1] is back into the attack
  • Sri Lanka needed 36 off the last 5 overs.

  • 44.6 Mirwais to J Mendis, 1 run, slower delivery outside off stump, Mendis walks forward and guides it down to third man
  • 44.5 Mirwais to T Perera, 1 run, fuller in length, drilled down to long-on
  • 44.4 Mirwais to T Perera, FOUR, he's slapped that hard! This lad can hit the ball hard. Short and outside off stump, Perera rocks back and smashes it very hard, this time sweeper had no chance
  • 44.3 Mirwais to T Perera, 2 runs, punched powerfully off the back foot to the right of extra-over, the man at sweeper runs to his left and tidies up

  • 44.1 Mirwais to J Mendis, 1 run, good length delivery on the off stump, Mendis taps it to cover-point

  • 43.6 Hamid to J Mendis, 1 run, high full toss, Mendis goes late on the punch and it goes off the outside half of the bat to third man
  • 43.5 Hamid to J Mendis, no run, slower ball down the leg-side, Mendis edges the glance, the ball just bounces in front of the diving keeper
  • 43.4 Hamid to J Mendis, no run, good length delivery outside off stump, Mendis defends
  • Round the wicket now
  • 43.3 Hamid to J Mendis, 2 runs, driven along the ground to mid-off, who dives and makes a half-stop
  • 43.2 Hamid to J Mendis, no run, dabbed towards point
  • 43.1 Hamid to J Mendis, no run, good length delivery on the off stump, Mendis fends it into the on-side

  • 41.5 Hamid to T Perera, 1 run, a touch fuller in length on the off stump, Perera turns it to mid-wicket
  • 41.4 Hamid to T Perera, no run, loud shout for LBW, not given. Good call, it was too high. Good length delivery angling into the left-hander, Perera misses the flick and gets hit above the knee-roll
  • 41.3 Hamid to T Perera, FOUR, short and outside off stump, Perera rocks back and cuts fiercely past backward point, off the mark in style
  • Thisara Perera, left handed bat, comes to the crease
  • 41.2 Hamid to M Jayawardene, out Caught by Nawroz!! Oh no! What have you done Mahela? He can't believe his eyes! It's a nothing ball and a nothing shot. Is there is a twist in the tale? Short and outside off stump, Jayawardene guides it uppishly but he hits this straight to third man, who takes an easy catch. Mahela is absolutely gutted. He was trying to play it finer, but hit it too well. M Jayawardene c Nawroz b Hamid 100(120) [4s-8 6s-1]
  • Hamid to M Jayawardene, THATS OUT!! Caught!!

  • 40.5 Shapoor to M Jayawardene, 1 run, that's it! 19th ODI hundred for Jayawardene. This is also his 4th World Cup hundred. Friendly ball from Zadran, Jayawardene glances it down to fine leg. Jayawardene hardly celebrates. Doesn't even take his helmet off. Just pumps his fist and gets on with iit. Jeevan Mendis congratulates him
  • 40.4 Shapoor to M Jayawardene, no run, good length delivery outside off stump, Jayawardene drives it to cover
  • Jeevan Mendis, left handed bat, comes to the crease
  • 40.3 Shapoor to Mathews, out Mathews Run Out!! Needless from Mathews and he knows it. Short of a length delivery just outside off stump, Mathews turns it just beside the pitch towards short mid-wicket, the fielder rushes in, grabs the ball and fires a direct-hit at the bowler's end to catch Mathews short. End of a fine 126-run partnership. Mathews run out (Nabi) 44(81) [4s-2]
  • Shapoor to Mathews, THATS OUT!! Run Out!!
  • It's a direct-hit and Mathews is short of his crease. Brilliant bit of fielding gives Afghanistan the breakthrough.
  • 40.2 Shapoor to M Jayawardene, 1 run, short of length delivery outside off stump, Jayawardene guides it to third man. 99 now
  • 40.1 Shapoor to Mathews, 1 run, in the airrrrr and just short of mid-off. It's a toughie! The fielder wasn't sure whether to dive forward or lean back to stop the ball. In the end he gets into a bit of a tangle and he fumbles the ball. Full and outside off stump, Mathews drills it very hard, it just bounces in front of Mangal, who tried to stop the ball with his fingers pointing up

  • 39.1 Dawlat Zadran to M Jayawardene, no run, short of length delivery just nipping away outside off stump, Jayawardene looks to flick, but the ball nips away very late and opens up the batsman, it was so close to the edge, but it just brushed the trouser on its way to the keeper
  • Huge shout for caught behind, not given. Jayawardene points to his hip, but Afghanistan have sent it upstairs. No problems with the no-ball. Jayawardene was right, the ball just flicked the trouser en route to the keeper. Nothing on Snicko as well. So Afghanistan have lost their only review.

  • Batting powerplay has been enforced.
  • Drinks are on the field now. Mahela Jayawardene has used his experience and played a great hand here for Sri Lanka. He has been very patient, but when the bad ball has come, he has not been shy to send it to the boundary. • Welcome back.. Sri Lanka did well to pull things after the 88-run stand between Stankizai and Shenwari. Afghanistan will be ruining the fact that they could not capitalise on the start. However, it is now upto their bowlers to try and make a match of it.
  • A disastrous batting powerplay - in which they scored just 10 runs and lost two key wickets - meant they lost their way. The lower-order then dropped anchor, before losing wickets in a hurry as they tried to accelerate in the death overs. Mathews and Malinga picked three wickets each, but Lakmal (10-1-36-2) was the pick of the bowlers. 233 should not be a stiff challenge for Sri Lanka, but Afghanistan have a good pace attack. Take a break and join us back in a short while for the run chase.
  • Again, as coach Andy Moles said, Afghanistan batted well for 30 odd overs and lost the plot thereafter. Although they lost openers Mangal and Ahmadi in quick succession after a decent start, Stanikzai and Shenwari steadied Afghanistan with a fine fifty-plus partnership. Stanikzai also registered a fifty in the process - his 5th in ODIs. However, he threw his wicket away and Shenwari too followed him soon.

  • The teams line-up for the national anthems. It is the Sri Lankan anthem which is played out first, followed by Afghanistan's anthem. There are plenty of people donning the Sri Lankan jersey in the ground.
  • Pitch Report: "New Zealand bowled out Scotland for 142 on this very surface and that is the reason Sri Lanka have opted to bowl. It has browned a bit, but there is still a good covering of grass. I think it will play a little bit better, but it will still be very tough early on. Quite short boundaries, the outfield looks very nice. We had a bit of rain last night, so it's lushed up a little. It might not be as quick as it normally is and it will be tough for the first 10-15 overs with the bat," reckons Simon Doull
  • Teams:
  • Afghanistan (Playing XI): Nawroz Mangal, Javed Ahmadi, Asghar Stanikzai, Samiullah Shenwari, Mohammad Nabi(c), Najibullah Zadran, Afsar Zazai(w), Mirwais Ashraf, Dawlat Zadran, Hamid Hassan, Shapoor Zadran
  • Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Lahiru Thirimanne, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara(w), Mahela Jayawardene, Angelo Mathews(c), Dimuth Karunaratne, Jeevan Mendis, Thisara Perera, Rangana Herath, Lasith Malinga, Suranga Lakmal
  • Sri Lanka have won the toss and have opted to field
  • Mathews: "We had a lot of time to prepare ourselves for this game, to work on the areas that we need to improve and we have been training so hard for the past few days. I will have a bowl first. It swings a little bit early on and we are playing four seamers so we will look to exploit the conditions. This has always been a wicket that swings and seams a little bit. One change, Nuwan Kulasekara is out, Thisara Perera comes in."
  • Nabi: "Yeah, from the last four months he (Andy Moles, coach) has joined us, he has helped us prepare well. We also wanted to bowl first because last night there was rain and the wicket was covered. There is a bit of grass as well and also the weather is cold. Hopefully, we will bat well. We have prepared well and worked on our plans. The boys have worked hard. We have one change, Aftab is not playing, Dawlat is playing today."
  • We know that the ball swings around at the University Oval and with a bit of moisture because of the overnight rain, it wouldn't be surprising to see teams opting to bowl first. The toss is not too far away. Lot's more coming up. Stay tuned...
  • Afghanistan
  • On the other hand, Mohammad Nabi's men could not live up to the expectations against Bangladesh as Mashrafe Mortaza and Co. registered an easy win over Afghanistan in Canberra. Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat, but Afghanistan were impressive with the ball, until they met Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan as the duo added over 100 runs for the 5th wicket. However, the Afghans closed out the innings in grand style as Bangladesh lost their last 6 wickets for just 34 runs to be bowled out for 267. In their run chase, Afghanistan were reduced to 3/3 in no time and from that point, could never really keep up with the asking rate. Eventually, Bangladesh bowled them out for 162 to enjoy a 105-run win.
  • Speaking after the match Coach Andy Moles stressed on the importance for competing hard throughout the game. "One of the issues we've had is that we do well with bat and ball for 35 overs and it's that extra 15 overs where we need to work on our concentration levels, our discipline, our execution and it's something we have spoken about regularly," Moles said.
  • Sri Lanka
  • The 2011 runners-up did not have a great start to their campaign as they lost badly to New Zealand in the tournament opener. After opting to bowl first, Angelo Mathews' bowlers found it tough to control Brendon McCullum, Kane Williamson and Corey Anderson as the trio scored fifties to help the Black Caps post a massive total on the board. In reply, apart from Lahiru Thirimanne, none of the Sri Lankan batsmen could make valuable contributions and eventually, they went on to lose by a massive margin of 98 runs.
  • Sri Lanka, who have played here twice before, are tagged as favourites to win this contest and captain Angelo Mathews has said that his side has prepared well and is not taking Afghanistan lightly. "We have worked extremely hard in the past few days to prepare ourselves for this game because we have to take it very seriously. We can't be complacent and we are well-prepared for the challenge."
  • We are at the University Oval in Dunedin today for this Group A encounter between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. Both teams lost their first game of the tournament and will be keen to open their account today. First things first. There was a lot of rain on Saturday in Dunedin, but the weather has cleared up and the radar looks good for today. So, we don't have to worry about or entertain thoughts of a washout.

  • Preview:

Sri Lanka started their campaign on an abject note against New Zealand in the opening game of ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. That 98-run loss will be rankling them and Afghanistan will be bracing themselves for the backlash. Sri Lanka will have to win, and convincingly at that, against Afghanistan to regain confidence and assert themselves as contenders for the World Cup. The one-week break would have helped the team regain composure but Afghanistan will be no pushovers.

Mohammad Nabi, the captain, and coach Andy Moles have emphasised on various occasions that Afghanistan are not there to just compete but to try and win games. Like their opponents, Afghanistan too come in to this game on the back of a 105-run loss against Bangladesh. The batsmen came a cropper after a decent bowling effort and Afghanistan will be gunning to prove that they are ready to fight against the big teams.

    Venue: University Oval, Dunedin

    Date: February 22, 2015

    Time: 0330 HRS IST

    Weather and pitch conditions:

If the previous game at Dunedin is anything to go by, expect some help for the seamers. New Zealand bowled Scotland out for a low total but lost as many as 7 wickets in chase of a lowly 142. The short boundaries will also aid the big hitters. It is expected to be a sunny Sunday and neither team will mind that.

    Team news:

    Sri Lanka

Nuwan Kulasekara might be replaced by youngster Dushmantha Chameera for Sri Lanka. Kulasekara went for 78 runs in his eight overs in the game against New Zealand but the rest are likely to retain their place.

Probable XI: Tillakaratne Dilshan, Lahiru Thirimanne, Kumar Sangakkara(w), Mahela Jayawardene, Angelo Mathews(c), Dimuth Karunaratne, Jeevan Mendis, Dushmantha Chameera, Suranga Lakmal, Rangana Herath, Lasith Malinga

    Afghanistan

Afghanistan might look at tinkering their batting order after an abysmal collapse but are likely to go in with the same eleven that played Bangladesh.

Probable XI: Afsar Zazai(w), Javed Ahmadi, Nawroz Mangal, Asghar Stanikzai, Samiullah Shenwari, Mohammad Nabi(c), Najibullah Zadran, Mirwais Ashraf, AftabAlam, Shapoor Zadran, Hamid Hassan

    Watch out for:

Seventeen-year old Usman Ghani played confidently in the warm-up game against India. He will like the short boundaries at Dunedin and could be the key for Afghanistan to get off to a good start while batting.

Lasith Malinga will be a tricky bowler to face for newcomers. Tracking the ball will be a challenge for Afghanistan as the Sri Lankan's pacer's slingy action is nothing close to what you'd face in practice. He has blown away many a side once he finds rhythm and Sri Lanka will be hoping that he finds it against Afghanistan.

    Quotes

You can't take them lightly because they can upset a team, and they've got nothing to lose. They'll just come out here and try to be positive and aggressive - Angelo Mathews guards against complacency
